Postcards from USA! And Road to America!

Today's postcard theme is the USA because that's where I'm going tomorrow! That means that there will be a 10 day break from blogging but after I get back I will treat you with holiday pictures :)

This is where I'm heading: North Carolina & Florida. If you don't hear from me after the trip, it probably means that the heat of Florida was just too much for me... :D

Twitter vs. Facebook

A friend of mine recently made a brave decision to quit Facebook, which made me wonder if I could do that, too. The answer no, I can't quit Facebook. At least not now. Even though my hate towards Facebook has only grown during these three years I've been on Facebook, I just can't quit, it has become too addicting for me.

The actual topic of this blogpost is: which one is better, Twitter or Facebook? I already know the answer to that question: Twitter. This friend of mine also feels that way. Of course, you may feel differently. In fact, probably most of the people who use social media, prefer Facebook over Twitter since Facebook has 900 million active users and Twitter has only 140 million active users. But it's not the quantity, it's the quality that matters... ;) Here are the pros and cons of Twitter and Facebook:

Twitter                                                                         Facebook
+ most of your friends aren't there                          + most of your friends are there
+ you can follow almost anyone, openness         + easy way to keep in touch with your friends
+ feeling connected to the world, #trending         + feeling connected to your friends
+ easy way to get connected with your idols       + reminds you of your friends' birthdays
+ new tweets all the time                                        - confusing privacy settings
+ the latest news                                                      - friends showing off all the time
+ no ads                                                                    - you can't be friends with everyone
+ nobody notices if your tweet hasn't                   - your parents are there
been retweeted or favourited                                - more addicting
+ your parents aren't there                                    - less "friends", not much to read
+ not too addicting                                                 - ads
- Beliebers, Directioners and other fanatics
are often trending (=very annoying)
- you miss most of the tweets
- having a conversation over some tweet
is harder
- those you follow don't usually follow back

Happy May Day!

My May Day, in Finnish vappu, celebrations begun yesterday when I went to the city center with a friend to attend the vappu celebrations. Like everyone else, we went to a hill where the university choir sang and the chairman of the university board (?) kept a speech.

Here are pictures of the hill before and after the speech; after the speech ended, we were "allowed" to put our student caps on. It was quite a neat sight to see thousands of people put their caps on at the same time. Almost like waiting for the new year :D After the caps were placed properly on the head, many people opened their champagne or fizz bottles and you had to be careful not to be knocked by a cork. One cork almost hit my face after having bounced from someone's head.

Another traditional vappu costume (although its use is not only restricted to vappu) is the student overalls. We who study at university have student overalls which we use at different occasions. This was the first time I used mine. My overalls are blue and my friend's overalls are purple. The color is determined by what you study. As a result, I look like I would be studying to become a car mechanic :D

Even though the weather yesterday wasn't that good, I had some nice time :) Thank you J for keeping me company!
