Happy May Day!

My May Day, in Finnish vappu, celebrations begun yesterday when I went to the city center with a friend to attend the vappu celebrations. Like everyone else, we went to a hill where the university choir sang and the chairman of the university board (?) kept a speech.

Here are pictures of the hill before and after the speech; after the speech ended, we were "allowed" to put our student caps on. It was quite a neat sight to see thousands of people put their caps on at the same time. Almost like waiting for the new year :D After the caps were placed properly on the head, many people opened their champagne or fizz bottles and you had to be careful not to be knocked by a cork. One cork almost hit my face after having bounced from someone's head.

Another traditional vappu costume (although its use is not only restricted to vappu) is the student overalls. We who study at university have student overalls which we use at different occasions. This was the first time I used mine. My overalls are blue and my friend's overalls are purple. The color is determined by what you study. As a result, I look like I would be studying to become a car mechanic :D

Even though the weather yesterday wasn't that good, I had some nice time :) Thank you J for keeping me company!
